Frontier is a scholarship program started by The Lone Star Ladies in 2010. We believe that art and the process of creating art enriches peoples lives in a way that no other field of study can. The Lone Star Ladies Present: Shop Austin is a FUNDRAISER for this scholarship! $5.00 of each ticket sale goes directly to the fund. In addition, we will be hosting a raffle at the event with awesome prizes! To qualify for Frontier, students must be Seniors graduating from an Austin Independent School District High School in the Spring of 2010, and plan to study the applied arts. Funding may be used for an apprenticeship or non-traditional training, i.e., students do not have to use the funds at a four year Liberal Arts College. Fill out the contact form below to be on our mailing list for updates or DONATE TODAY! Please read the letter below from Anne Marie Beard, one of the Lone Star Ladies. |

A letter from Anne Marie Beard: There's a moment when you know. I made this - it's ART, it's GOOD - this is a gift. That moment for me was in 5th grade. I made a "mixed media" art project using crayons, colored pencils, and construction paper. I actually remember drawing the backgrounds, cutting out shapes, and being entranced with the colors and the patterns. Then practicing how to draw people, so my canvas could be covered with dancers! The best part was saying, "Look Mom... I made it!" Artists will tell you that they knew about their talent at an early age - but not many young people have the chance to embrace that talent and see it through higher education or professional training. I was fortunate enough to study Costume Design at the University of Texas at Austin. My training included fine art drawing and painting, as well as garment & accessories construction, fabric dying and painting - and loads of cool classes! |

| As a senior at UT, I started my accessories business to see if I could make money with my talents. I will never forget walking to class at the Winship Drama Building, when my cell phone rang and I got the news that I had sold my first handbag! I was 21, and a real, money making artist! Frontier is our chance to help a talented young person fulfill their own dreams. The arts continue to lose funding in public schools, but there remains a core group of makers, crafters, enthusiasts and art buyers who want to see new talent developed. As The Lone Star Ladies, my sister and I hope to nourish a little seed of artistic vision and hope in Austin, Texas. Art is a gift, and we are all makers at heart. |
